What this is, and what it isn't

Am I Right lets you post two sides of an argument and collect votes from other people. You get a link. You send it to whoever you're arguing with, or anyone else. Whoever opens it picks a side.

It is not a survey. The people who vote here chose to vote. They are not a balanced sample of any country, age group, or anything else, and we do not adjust the numbers to make them one. A result here tells you what the people who happened to vote thought. It is not evidence of public opinion, it is not advice, and it should not be quoted as either.

By using the site, you agree to what's on this page. If you don't agree with it, please don't use the site.

Who can use it

You need to be 13 or older to use this site. It isn't built for children, isn't aimed at children, and isn't advertised to children.

If you're under 18, please don't buy anything here without asking a parent or guardian first.

Arguments here can be about difficult things — money, family, religion, relationships, politics, death. That's allowed, and we think it's good: disagreeing well is a skill. What isn't allowed is aiming at a real person. The line is drawn in the rules, and it's about who you go after, not what you're willing to discuss.

What you write stays yours

Posting here does not transfer your copyright. We do not claim to own your words, your idea, or your phrasing. You can post the same thing anywhere else, whenever you like.

What we need is permission to show it — otherwise the site can't work. So by posting, you give us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, and promote what you submit as part of running this site, including in previews when your link is shared. That licence is not exclusive, and it does not extend beyond running this site.

You keep the right to be recognised as the author of what you wrote. The moment you post, the site creates a free, dated receipt proving your exact words existed at that moment — see receipts and certificates.

Only post things you have the right to post. If you paste in somebody else's writing, that's on you.

Your information is not for sale

We do not sell, rent, or licence your personal information — not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to market research firms, not to anyone. We run no advertising trackers. This is a commitment, not a current preference, and it is set out in full in the privacy policy.

We may publish figures about what people voted for, as totals across many people — the kind of thing you can already read off the site yourself. Those will never be small enough or specific enough to point at an individual, and we will never present them as a survey.

What you may and may not post

The rules is the full version, and it's short. The essentials:

• Don't name or point at a real private person. No names, no photos, no details that identify someone, no "my neighbour at number 12".
• Don't share private information about anyone, including yourself.
• Don't harass, threaten, or target anyone.
• Nothing sexual involving anyone under 18, in any form, ever. This one gets reported, not just removed.

Every submission is checked automatically before anyone else can see it. That check is not perfect — no automatic check is — which is why every argument carries a "Report this" button, and why we read what comes in.

Votes

One vote per browser, per argument. We do our best to keep it that way, but a determined person can get around it, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Votes we believe are fake may be discarded. Counts are best-effort and can be corrected or reset. Nobody can buy votes here, and we don't sell them.

The things that cost money

There are two, they are both one-off payments, and neither is a subscription. Nothing on this site renews, and there is nothing to cancel. Payments are handled by Stripe; your card details never reach us.

Paid promotion — $5

Your argument takes one of ten featured slots shown above the live list for 24 hours, labelled "Paid promotion" so nobody is misled.

There are only ten. When they are all taken, no more can be bought until one expires, and the page tells you when the next one opens. We would rather sell out than sell a place at the top to everybody, because that place would then be worth nothing.

The ten slots are shuffled on every page load, so each one gets an equal turn at the very top rather than the busiest argument permanently outranking the other nine who paid the same price.

It buys visibility only. It does not buy votes, does not change how anyone votes, and does not guarantee any number of votes or any particular result. Because it starts working the moment you pay, it is non-refundable once placement has begun.

If a slot is taken by someone else while you are on the payment page, your payment is refunded automatically — you are never charged for a slot you did not get.

Print-ready certificate — $4.99

A proper document recording the verdict: the question, which side won, the vote count and the date, laid out to be printed and framed. 8.5″×11″ at print resolution.

Non-refundable once you have downloaded it, for the obvious reason that a file cannot be handed back. If it will not download, or the document is wrong, tell us and we will fix it or refund you.

Receipts and certificates, and what is free

This used to be explained badly, so here it is properly.

The receipt — free, always

The moment you post, we take your exact wording, run it through a one-way function that turns text into a short fingerprint, and sign that fingerprint with a private key, together with the date and time. That signed record is your receipt.

Change a single character of the text and the fingerprint no longer matches. That is what makes it evidence rather than a claim.

You are never charged for this. It happens on everything posted, without asking, and the public key needed to check it is published at /receipt-key.pub. Anyone can verify any receipt themselves, on their own machine, with standard tools and no account — see how to verify. It keeps working even if this website disappears, because the check does not involve us.

What the receipt proves, precisely:

• It does prove that this exact text existed, in this exact form, at that moment, and that this site signed it.
• It does not prove that you were the first person to think of the idea. Someone may have said the same thing elsewhere, earlier.
• It is not a copyright registration, a trademark, a patent, or legal advice. Dated evidence is genuinely useful; it is not a court filing.

The certificate — free to share, $4.99 to print

The certificate is a separate thing: a designed document about the verdict, not about authorship. It states the question, the side that won, the count, the date, and the receipt fingerprint.

• Free: a sharing-size image, generated for every argument, which you can post anywhere.
• $4.99: the print-ready file — larger, at print resolution, without the "sharing copy" line — intended for an actual frame.

So, the honest summary of what money buys: a bigger, cleaner file that is suitable for printing. It buys no additional proof, no extra legal weight, and no stronger claim to authorship, because the receipt already did all of that for free. Anyone telling you otherwise — including an earlier version of this page — was wrong.

The certificate is decorative. It says so on the document itself.

Paid promotion

Anything that got its position because somebody paid for it is labelled "Paid promotion". If we ever run a post on behalf of a company or a named person, it will say so clearly on the post itself. We won't disguise paid placement as popularity.

Posts made with partners

Occasionally a named public figure or organisation may post here, or post with us, under a separate written agreement — and that post may be auctioned, with the proceeds split under that agreement. Those posts are identified as such, and their own agreement governs them.

This never applies to an ordinary post. An argument you post is claimed as yours at the moment you post it. We do not put it up for sale, we do not transfer it to anyone, and there is no waiting period after which any of that changes. If you have seen an older version of these terms describing arguments becoming available after a period of going unclaimed: that is gone, and it does not apply to anything you have already posted.

Taking things down

Anything posted here may be removed at any time, for any reason, without notice. That is deliberately broad, because moderating a public wall requires it.

Ways to get something taken down:

• Use the "Report this" button on the argument. You don't have to say who you are.
• Email us at the address below. We answer.
• If it's your copyright, follow the copyright process.

If you posted it, you can ask us to remove it and we will. Two honest caveats. Copies other people already saved, screenshotted or shared are outside our reach. And if you or anyone else downloaded a certificate, that file is on their device; deleting the argument here does not reach into someone else's downloads folder.

What we don't promise

The site is provided as-is. We don't promise it will always be available, always be accurate, or keep working the same way. It may change or stop at any time.

To the extent the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you is limited to whatever you have actually paid us in the previous twelve months. If you have not paid us anything, that is zero. Some places don't allow limits like this, in which case the local rule wins.

Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything the law says cannot be limited.

If we disagree

Email first. Genuinely — one person runs this, and almost everything gets sorted out in a message or two. Give us 30 days to fix it before taking it further.

If that doesn't work, these terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, USA, and any claim goes to the state or federal courts located in Minnesota. You and we both agree to bring claims individually, and not as part of a class action. You can always bring a claim in your local small claims court if it qualifies, and nothing here stops you contacting a regulator in your own country.

Changes to these terms

We may update this page. When we do, the date at the top changes.

If a change materially reduces your rights, it applies going forward only — not retroactively to something you have already posted or bought. And a change will never give us permission to sell your personal information without asking you clearly first.
