What people post here

Everything on this site is written by the people using it. An argument is a question and two short sides — at most 140 and 60 characters — so copyright disputes should be rare. But they can happen, and there is a proper process for them.

Posting here does not transfer anyone's copyright to us. Authors keep what they wrote. See the Terms.

Reporting infringement

If you own the copyright in something posted here, or you're authorised to act for the owner, send a notice to:

Under US law (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)) a notice needs to include all six of these. Missing pieces slow everything down, so it is worth getting right first time:

• Your physical or electronic signature.
• What work you say was infringed. If several, a representative list is fine.
• The material you want removed, described well enough for us to find it — the page link is ideal.
• How we can reach you: address, phone number, and email.
• A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
• A statement that the information in your notice is accurate, and — under penalty of perjury — that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner.

Please send notices in good faith. Knowingly misrepresenting that something is infringing can make you liable for damages, including legal costs, under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f).

What happens next

• We look at it promptly. In practice one person reads it, usually the same day.
• If the notice is valid, we remove or disable the material.
• Because there are no accounts here, we usually have no way to contact whoever posted it. Removal is the remedy.

If your argument was removed and you disagree

Email us a counter-notice. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3) it should include your signature, identification of the removed material and where it was, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification, your contact details, and your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district (or, if you're outside the US, any district where we may be found).

You should know that a counter-notice means your contact details are passed to the person who complained, so they can decide whether to go to court. If we do not hear that they have, we may restore the material.

Repeat infringement

We remove material from anyone who repeatedly infringes copyright, and we may block further posting from the source it came from where we can identify one. Since the site has no accounts, that is a technical limit rather than a lack of intent.

Trademarks, impersonation, and everything else

Not every complaint is a copyright complaint. If someone is impersonating you, using your brand, or has posted something about you personally, that's usually faster to handle directly: use the "Report this" button on the argument, or email us. See the rules.
